University of Michigan | Carbon Neutral Infrastructure Analysis + Conceptual Design


The University of Michigan selected Integral Group to develop an engineering strategy to transform the University’s energy infrastructure. Reporting to the President’s Commission on Carbon Neutrality (PCCN), the Design Analytics and Advanced Energy Services teams are tasked with analyzing and conceptually designing carbon-neutral energy systems to deliver heat and power to the University’s 38 million square feet of real estate across its Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses.

The project covers four phases:

  1. Discover | Acquire and analyze ~500 million points of data about the University’s energy consumption, energy systems, and facilities, resulting in a high-resolution understanding of thermal and electric loads.
  2. Explore |  Create a dynamic, iterative process to explore and analyze a range of decarbonization strategies, from solar PV to electrification to biofuels.
  3. Design | Model investment-grade planning for multiple options for each campus (in total, the team has developed a dozen scenarios).
  4. Deliver | Realize a final strategy, available in print and interactive web-based formats, proving an implementation-ready, financially feasible roadmap to carbon neutrality.

The project’s scope also includes an analysis of potential synergies and challenges to improve resiliency for each of the campuses.
