The Kaiser Permanente SCPMG Regional Reference Lab in Chino Hills fills the needs of 50% of Kaiser Permanente’s Southern California members.

Introba (formerly Integral Group) provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services for this retrofit project, which converted a big-box retail store into a highly efficient laboratory facility. 85,000 of a 133,000 ft² concrete tilt-up building were retrofitted to be a high volume through-put testing facility, supporting Kaiser Permanente’s medical office buildings and hospitals in the surrounding area.

The project was originally presented without LEED goals, but after an eco-charrette lead by Introba, it was determined that the lab could achieve LEED Gold. The Introba team designed the building to have an EUI of 180, significantly lower than Kaiser’s standard of 420. Designed to include zoned air handling and high-efficiency equipment, the facility currently operates at an EUI of 155 and has been Certified LEED Platinum.

One of the project’s most significant successes is the four interior courtyards which allow easy access to fresh air and sunlight without compromising the tight envelope required by a lab environment. This design successfully demonstrates that you can achieve high sustainability goals while also providing a comfortable environment for the users, even in a highly controlled laboratory environment.
