IKEA is a recognized global household name for furniture and is strongly committed to being environmentally responsible.

Their vision for sustainability includes incorporating the latest technology for environmentally appropriate buildings when designing new stores. As IKEA has increased its presence in Western Canada over the last 15 years, they have relied on Introba (formerly Integral Group)’s mechanical consulting services to enhance its building design. Introba provided services to IKEA stores of over 300,000 ft² in Calgary, Richmond, Port Coquitlam, and Edmonton.

Introba has continually and progressively incorporated sustainable design features to help IKEA reach its long-term goal of reducing its carbon footprint and CO₂ emissions. Delivering all projects under budget and on time, these projects represent innovative design for a retail store with facilities that include offices, a restaurant, secure vaults, paint booths, wood-working shops, and complex early suppression fast response (ESFR) fire protection systems.

As a preferred partner, Introba has evolved the IKEA design, making each project more sustainable than the previous. In the more recent Edmonton and Calgary stores, heat recovery and demand-controlled ventilation systems were incorporated into the design. Such initiatives contributed to a 33% more energy-efficient design over original IKEA store designs. IKEA also received grants for its highly energy-efficient and sustainable design from the Commercial Building Incentive Program (CBIP), a Canadian government program.
