Holy Trinity CE Primary School

This project involves the expansion of a one form entry to two form entry increasing capacity from 210 to 420 pupils. The new buildings provide classrooms, teaching spaces and staff facilities with the existing spaces being remodelled to suit the school’s expansion.

The school remained in operation throughout the project and the work was carefully phased (8 phases) and co-ordinated to avoid disrupting the operation of the school as well as ensuring the safety of staff and pupils. The design included four new single storey wings and a single storey classroom extension plus the refurbishment of the existing facilities.

Elementa provided detailed design, mechanical, electrical, energy services and BREEAM for this project. This project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating. In order to achieve this Elementa undertook dynamic thermal modelling to justify design decisions regards the most appropriate building materials, renewable technologies, ventilation strategies and heating solutions for the scheme.

The resultant solution included the retention of the existing boiler, a gshp with heat recovery to serve the site, underfloor heating, rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation where possible and applicable, low energy lighting with daylight and occupancy sensing. A low carbon ground tube heating and cooling system was implemented, that achieved approximately 10% CO2 savings from a simple passive measure adding long term value. We achieved an EPC of 30 (B rating) , the building has an air permeability of less than 1m3/h.m2 in new build areas and the scheme also acquired 36% CO2 savings over the building regulations requirement.
