Sonoma Academy Receives BD+C Award Honorable Mention

Building Design + Construction hosts its annual Building Team Awards to recognize exemplary projects based on two criteria:

  1. Design/engineering/construction quality and excellence (50%)
  2. How the Building Team (architects, engineers, contractors, CMs, subcontractors, building owners, developers, government entities, etc.) collaborated to overcome obstacles and make the project succeed (50%)

This year, Sonoma Academy received an honorable mention for its “creative design and engineering solutions [that met] the owner’s strict sustainability and energy efficiency objectives.”  This project features two main spaces for students as well as working space for maintenance staff, two kitchens for teaching and food service and a large maker space that opens onto an outdoor teaching area.

Integral Group provided electrical and photovoltaic design services for the project. The PV panels are estimated to produce enough energy for the building that the project will be Net Positive. The project is seeking LEED Platinum, Zero Net Energy, Living Building Challenge and WELL Building Standard certifications. It is the first building in Sonoma Academy – and of its building type – to target all of these sustainability goals.
