Shannon Allison and Stet Sanborn Awarded CSE 40 Under 40

Integral Group is proud to announce Principal, Shannon Allison and Associate Principal, Stet Sanborn, have both been awarded Consulting-Specifying Engineering (CSE)’s 2018 40 Under 40 award.

CSE’s 2018 40 Under 40 competition is open to engineering and building professionals from around the world who are 40 years old or younger as of May 1, 2018.  Nominees may come from the following nonresidential building fields:

  • Academia
  • Applications engineers for manufacturers
  • Architecture
  • Building/engineering product inventor/developer
  • Building/engineering product manufacturing
  • Commissioning agents
  • Construction
  • Construction management
  • Design/build
  • Engineering (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, lighting, acoustic, etc.)
  • Facility management
  • Finance (related to construction)
  • Government (federal, state, local)
  • NGOs, membership, or trade association in the engineering field
  • Nonprofit environmental or development organizations
  • Project management
  • Researchers (in building/engineering field only)

“This year’s 40 Under 40 winners are versatile, experienced, ambitious, and inspiring,” said Amara Rozgus, Editor-in-Chief of Consulting-Specifying Engineer. “Now in its eleventh year, the program continues to honor the best in the industry. And it’s more competitive each year—these winners really were stand-outs in a crowded field of nominees.

About Shannon

Shannon’s passion for environmentalism initially started her down an educational path toward marine biology, but quickly transitioned to the building design industry. After receiving her engineering degree, she moved back to California and settled in the Bay Area. There she worked for Mechanical Design Studio, a consulting firm in Walnut Creek, CA before joining Integral Group, where she has worked for 11 years.

With a background in architectural engineering, Shannon incorporates a holistic approach to mechanical engineering. This comprehensive perspective allows her to seamlessly integrate the various disciplines throughout a project’s lifespan. Her experience crosses multiple sectors, from higher education to high-rise residential. However, a common thread ties these together: a commitment to sustainability and design excellence, which has resulted in several LEED Platinum-and Gold-certified projects.

In addition to her engineering excellence on numerous award-winning projects, Shannon is a frequent presenter and speaker at conferences and industry events. Recently she presented “Sustainable Building Design—Females at the Forefront of Deep Green Engineering” at the 2017 Society of Women Engineers National Conference. Shannon also has been an active volunteer with organizations such as Oakland’s Adopt-a-Spot, Coastal Cleanup Day, YMCA Building Futures, Spark Mentoring Program, LEAP Sandcastle Competition, Girls Inc., and other groups focused on sustainability and youth mentorship.

About Stet

As an associate principal at Integral Group, Stet is primarily responsible for highly innovative mechanical system design. He also leads the firm’s efforts in integrating high-performance building enclosures and passive design strategies into a wide range of building types in pursuit of net zero and net positive energy.

As a designer with a background in both engineering and architecture, he is able to bridge the communication gap that commonly occurs between disciplines. He serves as a visiting faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design, where he has taught the flagship building science course for the Department of Architecture and advised the UC Berkeley Solar Decathlon team. Stet also served as an adjunct professor of architecture at the California College of the Arts, teaching courses in building systems, sustainable design, and integrated building design.

Stet has increased Integral Group’s focus on designing low-cost, high-efficiency systems for affordable housing projects, increasing awareness of energy equity, and the importance of indoor air quality for at-risk residents. Stet also has served on volunteer committees with a local religious center to help reduce its energy use through energy retrofits and solar analysis and assessments, which has allowed the facility to install a 21.5-kW photovoltaic system. He helped oversee the design and procurement of the PV system and power-purchase agreement.
