Bungane 550

Bungane Mehlomakulu, PE LEED AP BD+C| Managing Principal – Austin

We know how to create high-performance and living buildings that are healthy, responsible, beautiful and long-lasting. We know how to design and construct low energy and net zero buildings that are sound investments. So why aren’t clients demanding these? How do we convince clients that high-performance buildings are in their best interest and not just a designer’s dream? This interactive dialogue extends beyond technical skills and provides insight into the marketing conversations that can make these projects commonplace. Led by Bungane Mehlomakulu, the group will hold an working forum to share tools, ideas and approaches that are effective in getting clients to “Yes!”

FITWEL: THE FUTURE OF WORKPLACE WELLNESS | Wednesday, November 8, 2017 | 12:00pm – 2:00pm

Aaron 550

Aaron Wouters, PE, LEED AP BD+C | Sustainability Advisor – Toronto

Fitwel® is a third-party certification system designed to help organizations enhance health, wellbeing and productivity in the workplace. Aaron Wouters is the first Fitwel Ambassador from Canada, and was intrigued with how Fitwel highlights key features and attributes of buildings to enhance human health and ensure chronic disease prevention. Thanks to the knowledge he has gained as a Fitwel Ambassador, Aaron now finds that he has a heightened awareness of how different building attributes can affect the health of its occupants.

This session will provide an overview of the Fitwel® certification system and also feature the perspectives from Integral Group, who in February 2017 became Fitwel Champions and currently have certified 3 offices with 3 more in progress across the USA, UK and Canada to the new Fitwel Standard.

BIG DATA IN BUILDINGS: INFORMATION OVERLOAD OR VALUABLE TOOL? | Thursday, November 9, 2017 | 10:00am – 11:30am

Sara 550

Sara Lappano, PE, LC, LEED AP | Managing Principal – Washington DC

As building technology continues to advance, the amount of data being generated in buildings has grown exponentially.  While the volume of data can seem overwhelming, effectively harnessing this information can have numerous benefits.  Owners can better understand how their buildings are being utilized and operated, while design teams can collect valuable data to gain a deeper understanding of how their projects are functioning.  This session will be geared towards architects and end users and is intended to be an open discussion of the challenges and opportunities associated with big data in buildings.  Examples of new developments technologies and case studies will be shared to facilitate the conversation.

HOW POLICY DRIVES DESIGN: TOWARDS A ZERO NET ENERGY FUTURE | Thursday, November 9, 2017 | 2:00pm – 3:30pm

Bill 550

Bill Updike | Principal – Washington, DC

This dialogue will discuss how progressive jurisdictions are using policy initiatives, programs and codes to drive towards net zero energy buildings and 100% renewable energy cities. Currently, 30 cities have adopted commitments to 100% renewable energy by 2050 or sooner, and many others have goals of carbon neutrality during that same time frame. Achieving these ambitious goals will require unprecedented changes in building design for energy and water efficiency, and renewable energy deployment. Many of the cities that have made these commitments have not yet figured out how they will attain these ambitious targets. This working session will serve as an effort to outline how cities can move towards 100% renewable energy or zero carbon goals through policy, programs, and finance, and what role architects, engineers, contractors and developers can play in guiding decision-making.
