Carbon Reduction Commitment.
Under the Carbon Reduction Commitment, all companies with an energy bill of £1m or more per year will, from April 2010, be required to report their energy usage, and to buy carbon credits to cover the resulting greenhouse gases. Retailers, banks, hotels and other service sector businesses, as well as hospitals and local authorities, will have a year's grace to cut energy usage. However, from 2011, they will all have to pay £12 for each tonne of carbon they emit. The 'Carbon Reduction Commitment User Guide', published this week by the Department for Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs (DEFRA) sets out the ways in which companies will be judged on their success in cutting energy usage, with the least successful forfeiting 10% of the sum they paid on carbon credits. Those businesses making effective savings will have the sum paid returned with a 10% bonus, in order to provide an incentive for continuing improvements in energy efficiency.
